What was the problem?
When Joyce came to Bomu hospital, she had a high viral load (HVL) and this was attributed to stress she was undergoing in taking care of her children and grandchildren. Joyce had a burden of paying school fees for her grandchild in secondary school and providing food and other basic needs for the family. The pressure to care for her children and the grandchildren had forced her to do some domestic jobs in the village for payment which was not sustainable and also was a contributing factor for her non- adherence.
Intervention
A need assessment was conducted and Joyce went through adherence counseling, her children were enrolled in the OVC program. Joyce was introduced to one of the household Economic strengthening program (drip irrigation farming) a project supported by Bomu Hospital.
Success
Through this project, Joyce earns an average of Ksh. 1600 per day from the produce of this project. She is now able to pay school fees for her children and meet her nutritional needs. She has also provided an alternative market for her neighbors that they don't have travel to Malindi in search of the Tomatoes.

We believe that HIV should not be the end but a manageable condition that does not impede the life of those who suffer from it.
